If you want to be gaslit and traumatised, use Care First. 1 or 2 ‘ok’ phone counsellors but most are an absolute disgrace, ill-equipped to deal effectively with anything other than mild wellbeing issues, in my opinion. If you want someone to parrot back to you the exact sentence you just said, leave awkward long silences after you’ve finished talking, say nothing constructive, validating or supportive and just stare at you in a creepy way, silently nodding, then discard and gaslight you when you ask them to do a little better, or fail to massage their saviour egos because you are self aware and have your own mind and thought processes, then use this company. My experience with them was traumatising, I’m not exaggerating. It actually HARMED me. I had several dreadful phone counsellors, lacking empathy, who sounded checked out, weren’t even listening properly, or acted like horrible ‘Karens’ when I even slightly challenged them. I was referred to 2 face to face and zoom counsellors who ‘did counselling TO me’, rather than with me, involving their basic ‘mindfulness’ exercises that I would say did not resonate with me or didn’t work, and that all I wanted to do was to talk and process my feelings. Both of them people showed lack of professional integrity, skill, empathy, or understanding of person-centred approaches, trauma, domestic or emotional abuse, even though they all insisted they were ‘specialists’ in these areas. When slightly challenged, ‘no that doesn’t work for me, I’d like to talk about this instead’, I was frequently gaslit that this, ‘wasn’t the right service for me,’ and ‘wasn’t helping me,’ without even asking me, code for, ‘I don’t want to work with you because you’re not doing what I want you to do’. Several have a condescending, power-trippy defensive attitude and none of them put me first or actually cared about me and my experience of their shoddy work or their arrogant, ‘making it about them’ type attitudes and argumentativeness. On the whole, a completely unprofessional collection of people, alien to any real mental health practitioners or therapists I have had the privilege to have worked alongside over the years (I am a mental health professional who expected a decent level of professionalism and competence). The first counsellor was hostile to me as soon I walked in the door for failing to print out a form before the session, then when I started crying, totally ignored me, continuing to angrily print out her precious form on her computer. When I called her out for he abject lack of empathy, she defensively pulled the, ‘maybe this isn’t the right service for you’ power move, then backtracked, allowed me to spill my guts for 40 minutes, then said NOTHING after I’d done blubbing, stared at the floor, avoiding eye contact. When I challenged her to show some empathy or respond, or make eye contact, she coldly said she was ‘processing’ what I just said (I.e. hadn’t been listening) saying again, ‘this is not the right service’ but then couldn’t tell me what the right service was, nor cared about re-referring me anywhere, allowing me to leave and get into my car having a panic attack, crying my eyes out. I have reported her to BCAP. When I complained about this to the clinical lead at Care First, she gave an ambivalent response, took no responsibility, apology nor showed any validation to this disgraceful unprofessionalism, her attitude ambivalent and her responses robotic. She nonetheless agreed to re-refer me to another counsellor, on Zoom. Whenever I talked about the person who affected me she shut me down because, ‘they were not in the room’ and she did not want to ‘pathologise’ anyone, which I was not asking her to do, and became defensive, bickering about this she coldly dumped me, session 3/6, as I was crying my eyes out about the emotional abuse I’d suffered. I phoned the next day and was told by phone counsellor, my case was ‘closed’ because I was ‘criticising’ her colleagues. Vile, unaccountable control freaks with no duty of care to clients who are seeking help and support. Reported.

They used to offer a good service, but now they answer the phone after a few minutes to tell me nobody can help me. I have to expect a call within 24 hours, which could be when I am at work or still in bed. Either way, they only phone once, so don't even go to the toilet. What a pathetic excuse for a counselling service.

Overall, this service is a bit of a hit and miss, but generally very helpful. Some of the counselors have been incredibly helpful, dedicating a great deal of understanding to my issues and helping me see them differently, others not so much. Overall however, every interaction has been mostly useful. The 24h helpline is helpful as some people, like me, tend to live during the night.

Care First used to be great over the past few years, but after reading the more recent reviews I’m not surprised why it’s been receiving the feedback it’s been getting. The last phone call I had with them was frustrating; the counsellor spoke to me in a patronising tone, talked over me, and after saying they couldn’t offer any help asked me if I was feeling “fobbed off” and “rejected” at the end of the conversation which I find really weird. I suspect that me mentioning being on the autistic spectrum was also partly what led to this condescending attitude as I was spoken to like a child, not to mention I found myself answering the exact same questions multiple times and had to frequently correct my work details. This company is nothing more than a shadow of its former self. Won’t be using them again.

Spoke to a lady on the 10th Feb at 10pm and she did not show any empathy on the call or any sort of understanding to the situation. She then said to go to nhs to book a professional councillor or someone private as she can’t provide the help I need. The call was so poor, i was shocked and such a waste of time

Called today and the outcome was "I don't really know what so say". Not really what you'd expect to hear from a counsellor. Waste of time.

Offered an online counselling service, then state they can only really offer support over the phone, miss leading and not helpful.

Used this service twice and can report it’s the worst service of its kind I’ve encountered.
